By: Gregory Bushman, LCSW, MSW

Anxious thoughts may arise regarding the potential for serious illness and death. This type of preoccupation may lead to an overreaction, resulting in needless over purchasing of supplies that could be better used for those who actually contact the illness.

A better response to more efficiently manage your anxiety involves:

Pay attention to the recommendations from the CDC and World Health Organization.

Limit your exposure to news broadcasts that share factual data, as well as our reading material.

If you have symptoms, such as a fever, cough, discuss your status with your doctor to determine a reasonable course of action.

If you continue to feel overwhelmed by your anxiety, consider discussing your concerns with a licensed mental health professional.

Anxiety about the Coronavirus:

While the spread of the virus can and will spread further, it is important to realize it is the most vulnerable of our population that are most at risk. Especially the elderly and those that have underlying medical conditions.

While maintaining vigilance and concern it is important not to be overwhelmed by the anxiety related to this virus.

We must realize that while the virus is spreading, there are things we can do to mitigate it’s spread.

  • Frequent and thorough handwashing
  • Isolating yourself if you have been exposed or have symptoms until the symptoms are resolved
  • Keeping surfaces disinfected
  • Consider minimizing contact with large crowds

It is also natural when we are stressed and anxious to begin to consider catastrophic outcomes. For the vast majority, the Coronavirus will have mild symptoms and will make a full recovery.
